This continues a series of posts sharing insights I gained from this year’s Leadercast event.)

In his short time as CEO of SAP, Bill McDermott has brought an exciting vision and new energy to the world’s largest business software company. He speaks boldly and passionately about the future. As McDermott shared his thoughts on the theme of “The Brave Ones,” two key ideas stood out to me.

First, I was glad to hear him acknowledge that the people always have the answers. He suggested that leaders should “unleash the creativity of the people so they can do good things.” Audacious ideas are waiting, if the people are given a chance to share and explore them.

The other comment that stood out for me was about dealing with competition. So many companies try to outdo the other guy by doing the same thing, but better. McDermott suggests another path to success:

“Don’t focus on the competition. Pay attention to what they don’t do. Fill the white space.”

We can stand out from the crowd not just by being better but by being different. Do what the others don’t do. Find the need and fill it.

What white space do you see in your industry? How can your organization fill it?

Can I fill a leadership development white space for you?

I am comitted to elevating emerging leaders and working with organizations who embrace that as a key to success. While investing in executive leadership development certainly has value, it is the frontline supervisors and managers who carry out the company mission on a day-to-day basis. Yet, they are often the least prepared to do so. If you want to change that dynamic in your organization, let’s talk!
